Customized Guided Trips For groups of 3 or more persons
Sundog Outfitters offers an amazing selection all-inclusive guided canoe trips in Northeastern Ontario (see below for route suggestions). Enjoy pre-trip accommodation, all the scrumptious meals for the trip duration, quality camping and paddling gear and the comfort of being accompanied by an experience guide. Pre-trip accommodation is provided at our base camp in our unique eco-tents (fully furnished canvas wall tents on platforms). We provide everything you need for the trip except for personal items, and sleeping bag.
To maximize your experience, our group size is kept small (no more than 8 participants with 2 guides) however a smaller group size of around 4-6 clients is typical . We encourage a participatory element throughout the trip which allows clients to gain new outdoor skills and enjoy the trip with confidence. Sundog Outfitters specializes in customized guided canoe trips. Whether you are a family, corporate team or group of friends, we encourage you to organize the group and we'll customize the trip to suit your desired canoe route, schedule and budget. Spanish River East and Main Branch Trips

The Spanish River Valley is Sundog's favorite canoeing destination. Full of rich history and known to harbour one of the largest remaining protected stands of continuous red and white pine forest in the world. It is no wonder why this river has captured the hearts of many canoeists. There are a wide variety of canoe trips designed for the river: from overnighters to trips over one week in length; varying levels of whitewater challenges from the rugged and invigorating West Branch to the playful and serene East and Main Branches.
Many sections of the Spanish serve as a perfect introductory whitewater canoe trip with excellent opportunities to view wildlife and hone your river tripping skills. We have designed several fully outfitted and guided trips along many sections of the amazing Spanish to attract a wide variety of canoeists...including those who just dream of trying!
Spanish River East Branch: Duke Lake to the 'Elbow'
Paddle the entire East Branch of the Spanish River along a chain of 12 small scenic lakes and into the main branch where you will have the opportunity to experience easy white water under the instruction of an experienced guide. This trip begins at the headwaters of the Spanish River at Duke Lake and winds its way through a series of scenic lakes buffetted by high rocky cliffs and ancient pine forest. This 95 km trip is perfect for adventurous types and is a great introduction to canoe tripping and whitewater.

Spanish River Forks to the 'Elbow': An Introduction to Whitewater Canoeing
Embark the VIA Rail Budd Car and ride the rails to the river! Learn the basics and experience the thrill of whitewater canoeing with a certified instructor and enjoy serene flat water stretches as you paddle along the stunning Spanish River and spend three peaceful nights at riverside campsites. This gentle section of the river is an excellent introduction to white water canoeing and is recommended for any level of canoeist. 4 days. Approximately 55km. Trip rating: 2. $550/person
This trip can also begin a few kilometers downstream at Sheahan, a tiny settlement along the river. This particular trip is Sundog's recommended Family River Canoe Trip. 3 days. Approximately 40km. Trip rating 2. $425/person.

Spanish River: The 'Elbow' to Agnew Lake: Experience the Famous Graveyard Rapids!
This trip takes you through one of the most spectacular sections of the river - the Graveyard Rapids. Aptly named, this mandatory portage will take you around 2 sets of beautiful Class IV drops. Beyond the Graveyards, you will have plenty of opportunity to experience paddling less difficult rapids and enjoy pleasant stretches of swift water and beautiful sections of quiet water as we approach Agnew Lake. 3 days. Spanish River West Branch Trips
Sundog is now offering guided trips along the West Branch of the Spanish River! Its reputation to be more remote and wilder than its sister, the East Branch, the West Branch offers spectacular scenery and less traffic. You also get to travel to the river put-in by the classic VIA Rail Budd Car, an experience on its own! Choose from the exhilarating trip from Sinker Creek to the Elbow or the more demanding trip starting at the village of Biscotasing ending at the Elbow.

Spanish River West Branch: Biscotasing to the Elbow
This trip will take you along the entire length of the most remote portion of the Spanish River: The West Branch. From the historic village of Biscotasing, which served as home to the famour conservationist Grey Owl for serveral years in the early 1900s, the trip begins with a gorgeous paddle on Biscotasi Lake. Once over the dam at the headwaters of the West Branch of the Spanish, be prepared to get physical along several portages that skirt around spectacular rapids and falls. But don't worry! The final 50km along the main branch rewards you with an easy whitewater run offering a chance to improve your whitewater skills and 'go with the flow'! 6 days. Approximately 115km. Spanish River West Branch: Sinker Creek to the Elbow
This trip highlights the lower section of the West Branch of the Spanish River and the Main Branch between the Forks and the Elbow. Although less physically demanding than the trip described above, you will experience a stunning portion of the river from exciting rapids and waterfalls to mysterious meanders through lush wetland. Again, you will be rewarded with an easy whitewater run offering a chance to improve your whitewater skills during the lower portion of the trip. 5 days. 70km. Trip Rating: 2. $680. | |

Introductory White Water Canoe Trip
The French River is one of Ontario's finest Heritage Rivers and some of the best spring whitewater runs can be found there. Pink granite outcrops blanketed with wind swept white pine slope gently down to the river that served as one of Canada's main highways for the Voyageurs during the fur trade many years ago. Join us for a journey on this spectacular river, feel the thrill of the rapids and travel back in time.

Grey Owl Country: Biscotasi and Indian Lakes
Flatwater Canoe Trip
The rugged beauty and rich Canadian history of Biscotasi Lake has enticed Sundog to introduce this area into its program as a fabulous flatwater paddling destination. Experience Grey Owl's favourite canoe country first hand as we explore the headwaters of the Mississaugi and Spanish Rivers on 'Bisco' and Indian Lakes. Also, one of the highlights of the trip is a shuttle on the locally famous Budd Car to the historic town of Biscotasing. This unique train ride will set the pace for a truly northern experience.

Flatwater Canoe Trip
This guided canoe trip is a great chance to experience Sudbury's crown jewel, Killarney. Located south of Sundog's basecamp, our put-in at the westerly entrance of Killarney allows us to leave the crowds behind and explore the crystal clear lakes and quartzite ridges. This tripping area was a favourite for the Group of Seven artists...and you will see why this is true. This is an introductory flatwater canoe trip and is suitable for all levels of canoeists. 3 days. Trip rating: 1. $375.

Flatwater Canoe trip
Amazingly beautiful and rugged, this guided canoe trip through the backcountry of Elliot Lake is a great chance to burn off some steam...and it's well worth the effort. Huge rolling hills, pine trees for as far as the eye can see, and pristine lakes provide us with numerous canoe route options. Excellent hiking opportunities take us to superb lookouts. This trip is an introductory flatwater canoe trip and is suitable for all levels of canoeists however it involves some strenuous portages.

After a very cool ride on the VIA Rail Budd Car, cross the Spanish River and portage beyond and you will find yourself immersed into spectacular, uncrowded areas west of the Spanish River Valley. Travel ancient waterways and portages as you follow the path of historic log drives-now-gone-wild during our journey from Pogamasing to Biscotasi Lakes. Trip Skill Rating system:
Canoe trips are rated on a scale of 1 to 3 as follows:
1 - Easy paddling, some portages, prior knowledge of canoeing is not essential 2 - Moderate paddling, some portages, some whitewater situations, some knowledge of canoeing is recommended but not required 3 - Some strenuous paddling, portages likely and more frequent, definite whitewater situations, some previous canoeing experience is recommended.
Upon registration, we will mail you an information package including a list of personal items and rendezvous points and times for arrival and departure. Participants are required to fill out waivers of liability and assumption of risk forms before departing on our trips
