Winter Programs:


 

Picture yourself surrounded by towering ancient pine trees as far as the eye can see, the snowflakes sifting down from the sky as a Whiskeyjack flits from branch to branch. Your senses are clear, the air is crisp and you are in tune with the nature that surrounds you. 

Embrace what the Northern Ontario winter has to offer: the mighty white pine, the towering hills, the wildlife, the awe-inspiring wilderness. Allow us to unlock this authentic winter experience. You will firmly grasp the key to the true meaning of a natural winter at it's best.

Snowshoe Trails
Enjoy the healthy benefits of snowshoeing on back country trails starting from the Sundog base camp within the beautiful Vermillion River Delta. Bring a trail lunch and spend the day exploring the wetland and surrounding hills, taking in the wonders winter has to offer. Snowshoe rentals available. Guided tours upon request.

Upon request, a heated canvas wall tent and log sauna located at our basecamp is available for warm-up or 'apres snowshoe' group gatherings.

Prices:
Self-guided snowshoeing: $5.00 per vehicle*
Snowshoe rentals: $8.00*
Use of warm-up tent/sauna: $3.00 per person*
Back Country Guide: $50.00 for half-day trek (up to 3 hrs) or $100.00 for full day trek (up to 7 hrs)*

*Reservations required for all winter day activities

 


Family Snowshoe Day
Explore the woods in the winter by snowhoe within the Vemillion River Delta Forest Reserve.  This easy 2-hour guided hike is the perfect opportunity for families to enjoy the beauty of nature in the winter under the leadership of expert snowshoer Jim Little, as featured in the Sudbury Star, December 31, 2005.  Observe and identify wildlife tracks, receive helpful snowshoeing tips and enjoy a warm drink and campfire during your outing.

Date: To be announced
Price: $8.00 per adult and $5.00 per child (must be accompanied by an adult).
Adult-sized snowshoes available for $5.00 (special price for this event only).
Rating: Easy.  Suitable for families.

 Annual Top of the Mountain Snowshoe Trek


Join Sundog on its annual day trek to the highest peak around - the old Windy Lake Fire Tower! From the Sundog basecamp on Simmons Lake, you will be guided along 8km of stunning backcountry and led to a magnificent view atop the fire tower hill. Hot trail lunch and snowshoe rentals available upon request. Relax with friends and enjoy a cuppa hot cider around the wood stove in the log cabin following the trek.

2008 Date to be announced. $10 per person. Snowshoe rental $8, Group and family rates available 
Rating: intermediate. Must be in good physical condition.
Trek begins at 10am from Sundog basecamp (approximately 6 hours duration)

The Way to Winter Wilderness - Introductory Traditional Winter Camping:

No 'cold camping' here!  Experience the comforts of winter camping in a heated canvas wall tent set up by YOU at the Sundog basecamp on Simmons Lake. This is the perfect opportunity to learn the art of winter bushcraft and experience Canada's wonderful winter in its prime...the traditional way. This 1-night package is being offered during the following dates: 

2008 Date to be announced. Price: $215 per person plus applicable taxes*
Includes instruction/guide, gear (snowshoes, tent, camping gear*), and all meals beginning with lunch on Saturday and ending with lunch on Sunday.  *Winter rated sleeping bags not provided.

 

*Discount prices available for those wishing to bring their own food and camping gear (excluding canvas tent).

 

If travelling to Sudbury the night before, we can assist in arranging local accommodation (B&B, Inn or Hotel).

Suitable for beginners.


Extended Winter Camping Expeditions

Traveling by snowshoe while hauling gear with toboggans, you will embark on a trek that will take you on a path less traveled into the heart of the Northern Ontario wilderness. Experience winter travel in a truly traditional sense.
